Emerging Market

.
Saturday was a fabulous day full of sunshine and fresh produce.

Shoppers at the new Downtown Windsor Farmer's Market lined up to buy fresh fruit and veg (many of which sold out quickly) and listen to the free concert provided by the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.

I loved the selection and the prices were fabulous. I arrived at 10 for the grand opening but since the market started at 8, I missed out on great things like fresh strawberries and green beans.

Plenty of bloggers were on hand to cover the event. Check out these blogs for more info and great photos:The market's official website is now live so bookmark it and check it often.

A big thanks to the volunteers that made this happen! Great job!!!

As much as I love it that the market has finally returned to the downtown area, table prices are way too high for vendors to be able to make any kind of return on their efforts.

Farmers’ tables start at $115 and crafters’ at $40.

Compare that to Chatham where tables cost $30 ($20 if you're a regular vendor). And Riverdale Market in Toronto costs $25 per market, so it's not just because Chatham is so much smaller than Windsor.

How about cutting table pricing radically — I’m sure that will more than double the number of vendors, and enable them to keep prices reasonably competitive, which is essential to keep customers coming back regularly.

I really want to see this market succeed, but with the current pricing structure I am very concerned that it won't survive beyond its first season.

Totally agree. The one booth is actually $134/week! Even if you pay someone minimum wage to work the market for you, they have to be there most of the day and you'd have to sell a lot of produce to make a profit. I am overjoyed at the response they got though as earlier in the week there were to be only 3 food vendors and you saw that there were 7 I think, if you include the take out place at the end.

Agreed. We'll have many varieties of chemical-free heirloom tomatoes (plus more) from our 11 acres near Point Pelee but won't likely attend the market. So if you are interested email me at peleefarmer@hotmail.com
