Last summer I had written Hello Deli to discuss what Olde Riverside Schwab's was offering in the way of local foods. Their eNewsletter sent me deals and specials that I would post on this blog. Shopping trips extended far beyond my grocery list as the store had more to offer each time I would enter; the latest addition was an oven to serve bread, warm ribs or a fresh rhubarb pie...the scent of which is hard to resist!
Unfortunately, today's eNewsletter did not contain any of the usual exciting news. Instead, the store announced that they were closed. There was no reason why but a very gracious message thanked loyal customers as well as local suppliers. The list is enough to make a locavore cry: Schinkel's Legacy, Valerie's Sauces, Norpac Beef, Colonial Coffee, Barron Poultry, Deli Meats, Bedell's, Simpson's Orchards, Vitale Produce, Wonder Bread Beanstock Inc.
This store was one of the reasons that being a locavore was easy. Quality and freshness from Ontario suppliers, most from Essex County. No more fresh pies, Ontario ice cream, or apple pork sausages.
More than just a great store, this Schwab's was run by very friendly staff and an experienced butcher. I am very sad that they had to close.
Do not forget to support your favourite independant store or restaurant. Our support is needed in so many places so if you can, get out there and send a little cash their way.

Things are just getting tougher and tougher in this town...
That is so sad. My partner and I also strive always to support local independent business when we can. We would always get our vitamins and supplements from Green Harbour Organics in Riverside, hoping to help Marius get off his feet. But he closed this year, as well. Menard's Seafood Tavern, after years in the neighbourhood, has a Power of Sale sign out front.
